$29.1 billion online retail sales in Nov. – Dec. 09
Yes, the markets are looking up again. $29.1 billion – thats the figure a Comscore report claims – is the value of online transactions that happened in the holiday season in the year just gone by.Truly an indication of the growing optimism for the economy in 2010. The product categories that led this surge in sales include Jewlery & watches, consumer electronics, sales of event tickets, computer hardware and books & magazines.
In another research, Gartner predicts that by 2013, mobile phones will overtake PCs as the most common Web access device worldwide.
The total number of PCs in use is projected to reach 1.78 billion units in 2013. By 2013, the combined installed base of smartphones and browser-equipped enhanced phones will exceed 1.82 billion units and therefore, be greater than the installed base for PCs thereafter.
There will be a 90% mobile penetration rate and 6.5 billion mobile connections. The report also goes on to say that by 2014, over 3 billion of the world’s adult population will be able to transact electronically via mobile or Internet technology.
What does it all mean for you as a marketer?
It means that if you haven’t yet jumped on to the online retail bandwagon, its time you did so. And when you set up your online shop, take care to ensure that it is compliant with mobile browsers. More and more people will be using their mobile phones to make purchases online.
